7 Email marketing lessons that I learned from George Costanza (and you should too!)

Ever imagine that George Costanza from Seinfeld could have some golden email marketing tips up his sleeves?

After all, what could a fictional character known as a shady character with outlandish plans possibly have in Common with a marketing campaign designed to reach clients through their email inboxes?

George Costanza is a more useful email marketer than you thought. George Costanza was an email marketing genius despite all his flaws. He knew how to get what he wanted, whether it was for a job interview or a second chance at an ex-girlfriend. While I don’t suggest you follow his example, there are some lessons that we can all take from the man who said, “It is not a falsehood if you believe in it.“.

Email Marketing Lesson #1

Keep your message short and sweet

Email marketing is no different. Keep your emails brief and straight to the point. Nobody wants to read an entire novel in their email.

George would send an email that was short and sweet. For example, “Hey Jerry, wanna grab lunch?” George. No need to go on and on about unnecessary details or for a lengthy introduction. The same principle applies to email marketing campaigns. Keep your message concise and clear.

Email Marketing Lesson #2

Use humour as a way to increase your engagement

George made us laugh all the time, and we could all learn from him. Adding a little humour can make your emails more engaging and fun. Just be careful not to overdo it.

George never hesitated to crack a joke, no matter how bad it was for him. Try adding humour to your emails to keep your readers engaged. If you are selling office supplies, for example, use a subject like ” Don’t be a Kramer! Organize your desk with the brand new Widgetron 3,00“.

Email Marketing Lesson #3

Stand Out from the Crowd

George never blended in, and this is an important lesson for email marketing. Be sure to make your emails stand out by using unique content and an eye-catching design.

Like George’s famous puffy shirt, your email campaigns need to be memorable. They should stand out among the sea of dull messages. Make your emails stand out by using an eye-catching subject line, bold fonts, vibrant colours, and creative images.

Remember the content! Sending personalized messages to your audience is a better alternative to sending generic sales pitches. If you are selling fitness products, send an email that includes a customized workout plan tailored to each subscriber’s fitness level and goals.

If your emails sound and look the same as everyone else’s, you will quickly fade into the background. Be bold, unique and stand out.

Email Marketing Lesson #4

Dare to be Creative

George always came up with outrageous schemes. Email marketing can benefit from the same principle. Be creative to make your campaigns memorable.

George had the brilliant idea to create a coffee-table book on coffee tables. Although it may not have been the best idea, this shows the power of creative thinking. You can use the same approach when creating your email campaigns.

Try something unexpected and new, such as sending a video instead of text emails or running a social media contest tied to your email campaign.

Email Marketing Lesson #5

Know your audience

George always tried to impress the girls. This also works with email marketing. You should know your audience more than they do themselves. Tailor your messages according to their needs, wants, and interests.

You should customise your email campaigns for your audience, just as George would personalise his pick-up line to the woman he is talking to. If you are selling pet products, don’t send the same email to everyone. Segment your email list based on pet age or type, then send them targeted emails that are tailored to their needs.

Email Marketing Lesson #6

Test, test, test!

George is not afraid to experiment with new ideas, and this also applies to email marketing. Try different subject lines, sending times and content to find out what works for your audience.

George said once, ” Never again will I do the opposite!“, but sometimes doing the opposite is a good idea. Do not be afraid to experiment with different email campaigns and see what works best for your audience. Sending emails at other times, using various images and subject lines, adjusting your tone of voice and changing your email content are all things you can try.

Email Marketing Lesson #7

You can twist and turn, but you should never give up

George was the king of persistence. You guessed it… Email marketing is no different. Do not give up if things don’t work out the way you want. You can keep tweaking and trying until you find what works for your audience.

George tried to win back all his ex-girlfriends, no matter how many rejections they gave him. Although we do not recommend the same email marketing tactics, the principle of perseverance still applies. If a campaign fails, you can try another approach or change your strategy to find out what works best for your list.

Here you go…

Jerry, these email marketing lessons are pure gold!

George Costanza is not the first person to come to mind when you think about email marketing. However, we can still learn from him.

These seven email marketing tips, from being concise to persistent, can improve your email campaigns.

Take a cue from George and rock their inboxes… Costanza-style!
