Take a peek into life as a travel writer

If you like the idea of writing travel articles for print or online publications, or contributing to travel guide books, then this 2-hour seminar will give you a taste of what's in store.

Do you love travelling? Would you like to get paid to write about your adventures? Travel writing is a lot more than a diary of your trip. It takes skill and a sense of exploration if you want to succeed as a full-time or part-time travel writer.

This “Industry Insight” seminar is great if you want to dip your toes into the exciting world of travel writing. You’ll get a clear idea of what's involved so you can decide for yourself whether a life of writing about your wanderlust is for you.

Here's what you'll learn:

This seminar will cover:

  • publishing opportunities (newspapers, magazines, electronic publishing, travel literature, other avenues)
  • types of travel stories (service stories, destination stories,
    personal essays)
  • what it takes to be a travel writer
  • some straight talk about earnings
  • finding and focusing your story (the right subject, travel trends, developing your story)
  • the art and craft of travel writing
  • getting published and making contacts (including tips on joining professional associations)

What is an “Industry Insight” seminar?

An “Industry Insight” seminar is designed to give you a clear overview of that particular industry. These seminars are presented by industry professionals who are very experienced in their chosen field.

This seminar is invaluable if you want a “sneak peek” into the industry without having to commit to a longer course. In short, it will help you make up your mind if this is the right path for you.

These courses do NOT focus on the nuts and bolts of writing and constructing sentences. If you need guidance in this area, we suggest you enrol in the 5-week course, Magazine Writing Stage 1 or the 5-week Travel Writing course.

Ideally you have either:

  • Already completed Magazine Writing Stage 1 and want to build on your skills with specialist knowledge about writing travel articles.
    OR
  • You intend to enrol in Magazine Writing Stage 1 AFTER you complete this “Industry Insight” course.

“Introduction to Travel Writing” will also benefit if you are already working as a feature writer and would like to expand your portfolio into the wonderful world of travel.

"Just wanted to write and say I attended the Travel Writing seminar. It was fantastic. The realistic life experiences provided gave us all insight into the truth about the industry and what we should expect. Geoff was completely honest and I can not wait to get stuck into my freelance writing.

"I will definitely be recommending and also attending other writing courses in the future. The course was also great for meeting other contacts in this industry and professionals who can assist with editing."

CAITLIN WRIGHT

"It was exactly what I was looking for and catered to all levels of the group. I thought it was very informative, concise and the presenter was very honest about the industry. I felt I got a lot out of it and will definitely be using that information."

ANNA ATKINSON

"Great seminar. I was taking this seminar as a trial to see if I would like it enough to take a longer course at Sydney Writers' Centre. It was terrific and I am ready to take a longer course! [Geoff is an] excellent instructor. He really helped generate ideas on how to get published. This was beneficial information to its fullest."

“I did this great course at the Sydney Writers' Centre where I learned about getting into Travel Writing. If you’re interested in this, and passionate about writing and travel, I would highly recommend it.”
- Tennille Schell

"I really enjoyed the seminar. As a complete novice to the writing game, I found the hints and tips great – it's helped me start to formulate all the travel stories I have collected over the past few years into pieces that might be of interest to an editor somewhere!"
- Alison Fox

"The honesty of the presenter and his insight into the travel writing industry was invaluable.

"I believe the information as useful and practical for travel writing, which is quite distinct from other forms of writing. I did a longer travel writing course with another training provider and probably learnt more in one night than I did over 6 weeks with them."
- Nicholas Corbett

"Being an absolute novice but having an interest in travel writing, Geoff provided insider knowledge and helpful information and tips. I now know where to start and feel enabled to do so. Thank you."
- Gabrielle Martin

“Packed with excellent content. You can immediately begin honing your skills based simply on the information provided. Jeff knows his subject and is generous in sharing his knowledge. I have a step by step plan on how I could be a travel writer. In addition I was able to clearly identify my niche and how I would write for that market."
- Sharyn Reesby

"I loved that the tips and tricks of the trade really were useful and that Geoff was
kind enough to share them. Having him
as a new networking partner to run ideas
by has also increased my motivation!
Thank you so much!"
