Creative Writing Stage 1 is one of the most popular courses at the Sydney Writers' Centre. If you want to explore the world of writing - but are not sure where to start - this course will enhance your creativity.

Maybe you want to write short stories, a family history or turn your journal into something more. We'll help you get started. This course is ideal for people who want to explore writing fiction, short stories or perhaps, one day, a novel. This creative writing course will teach you how to:

  • kick-start the creative writing process
  • tap into your imagination
  • draw from everyday experiences and memories
  • examine different types of creative writing
  • give structure to your writing
  • use characters and dialogue

By the end of the course you'll improve your creative writing skills and have the confidence to pursue your own writing projects.

This online course is the same as the Creative Writing Stage 1 course conducted in the training rooms of the Sydney Writers' Centre. You're able to take part in this interactive web-based course even if you don't live in Sydney or can't get to the Centre.

Lessons are delivered via our password-protected classroom. You and your online classmates are encouraged to participate and ask questions online. The presenter will answer your questions online as well. You are also encouraged to submit pieces of work which the presenter will give you feedback on. You need high-speed internet access (cable or ADSL) in order to participate in this course.

Your virtual classroom

You can attend the virtual classroom any time, any day of the week. This way, you can fit your learning into your schedule and lifestyle. You do not have to commit to a set time each week. However, you MUST complete each module during the week specified, or you won't get the most out of the course. Each week builds on the one before and you have the opportunity to ask questions and make comments about the topics we discuss each week. To sample a taste of how this will work, click here.

How much time should you commit each week?

You need to commit a minimum of 2 hours a week. Beyond that, we recommend that you put into practice what you have learnt that week. While you are expected to commit to a minimum of 2 hours a week, we won't hold you back if you are super keen and want to spend much more time than that on your writing. We are happy to give you feedback on any writing you do during the course.

Online Magazine Writing

Rave reviews about our Online Creative Writing course:

"I just wanted to send Cathie, Valerie and the team a VERY BIG THANK YOU for coaching me in our online Creative Writing course. The information I received during the course has been invaluable and gave me the tools I needed to become one of the 28 winning co-writers of James Patterson’s Chain Thriller AirBorne.

"I still cannot believe the news… but as I have had emails from Random House and my name has been posted on Facebook, I had better get my head around it!"
- Kylie Williams

"I am so pleased you put this together!! I have a two year old who I am home with four days per week so the minute he went down for his midday sleep I would dash for the computer. I found the presenter's voice and sense of humour a delight to listen to and Pamela's exercises fun.

"It was great to be able to stop the recording and go back where I missed something or was too slow in taking notes and the handouts will be a great reference for later on. The availability of the online course to us 'out of towners' was great. There is not always a lot available when you get out from the main cities. Also, being able to listen to it at any time of the day was very convenient.

"Thank you to everyone involved in getting this course up and running, it was just what I was needing to do."
- Nicole Stenson

“I have had an amazing 5 weeks. I have learnt so much in such a short time. I want more. My writing is so much tigher. I look back to my first submission and know what to do with it now. This has been a fantastic course. I have been able to fit it into my life. There has been no pressure, just support and understanding. Thank you.”
- Angelina Cimino

"The content was better than expected. It was clear, concise and provide me an opportunity to learn. I liked being able to listen to parts of the dialog over and over again until I 'got it'."
- Lillian Garcia
