It was great to have best-selling author Matthew Reilly drop in on us at the Sydney Writers’ Centre recently. Matthew is the author of huge sellers like Ice Station, Contest, Temple and, most recently, The Five Greatest Warriors.
You can listen to our podcast interview with Matthew here or on iTunes.
Or we’ve got a video podcast you can stream through your computer here.
One of our most popular courses continues to be our one-day seminar Grammar and Punctuation Essentials. We knew there was a real need for this seminar because of how our school system failed so many of us in recent years by neglecting to teach these fundamentals. As a result, we receive phone calls every day from people who just want to learn the rules and how to apply them in writing.
The best part is that the seminar is fun and dynamic. You would never imagine that grammar and punctuation could be so enjoyable. But, thanks to our passionate presenter Deb Doyle, you’ll love this seminar – and walk away armed with valuable knowledge that you can apply immediately.
After this one-day seminar, you'll transform your writing so you can prevent errors from occurring and bring the writing of any document to an acceptable standard for publication.

TIP: Identifying your subject and object
Sometimes, you might come across people referring to the 'subject' and 'object' in a sentence. The 'subject' is linked to the verb: the person or thing that does the verb is the subject. In the examples below, the subject is underlined:
Rambo likes to sit under the desks.
Students studying the online writing courses can listen to the lessons at any point during the week.
The 'object' is the person or thing involved in the subject performing the verb. So in the examples below, the objects in the sentences are:
Rambo likes to sit under the desks.
Students studying the online can listen to the lessons at any point during the week.

Is this a word? IdeationEven though I have a semi-decent vocabulary, I'm often learning new words. When a friend in advertising mentioned ‘ideation’, I was sceptical. It reminded me too much of the silly word once used by the Liberal Party in their election campaign: ‘Incentivation’. It was a ridiculous word. (And they lost the election.)
But I digress. Ideation is a real word. In your everyday English dictionary, ideation means ‘to form or have an idea of; to imagine or conceive’.

Book giveaway – The Five Greatest Warriors by Matthew Reilly
Publishing phenomenon Matthew Reilly recently dropped by to chat to us about his incredible writing journey, and his latest book, The Five Greatest Warriors. It’s hard to talk about Australian publishing and not mention Matthew Reilly. From self-published author to international bestseller, his books continue to enthrall readers of all ages.
You can listen to our podcast interview with Matthew or watch the video of it here. To celebrate this we have one hardback copy of The Five Greatest Warriors, signed by Matthew Reilly, to give away. This could make a perfect Christmas gift – if you can bear to let it go!
It began with six stones. Jack West Jr and his loyal team are in desperate disarray: they’ve been separated and their mission is in tatters, and Jack was last seen plummeting down a fathomless abyss.
After surviving his deadly fall, Jack must now race against his many enemies to locate and set in place the remaining pieces of The Machine before the coming Armageddon.
As the world teeters on the brink of destruction, Jack will learn of the Five Warriors, the individuals who throughout history have been most intimately connected to his quest.
If you’d like a chance to win this very special prize, just tell us what your favourite Matthew Reilly book is, and why. (Or tell us about your favourite thriller/adventure book.) Did you know? Kit and Caboodle
When someone tells you they want ‘the whole kit and caboodle’, they basically mean they want everything, or ‘the entire collection of things under consideration’. It’s another one of those funny phrases that if we stood back and actually thought about what we were saying, we would surely question its meaning. Well, the phrase actually has a rather complicated history. Both words have very similar meanings in English: a kit is a set of objects, as in a toolkit, or what a soldier would put in his kit-bag; a caboodle, or boodle, is a group or collection. It seems the phrase grew out of a number of variations that have been in use for centuries – kit and boodle, kit and boiling, the whole boodle, the whole caboodle – but the words themselves are Dutch in origin, kitte being a wooden vessel and boedel, meaning estate, inheritance, or possessions.

WEBPICK: Word2
This is not a time waster. Any game that improves your vocabulary and inspires your competitive spirit should be considered, um, professional development! Okay, so you probably shouldn’t get too caught up in this one while you’re supposed to be working, but if you’re a fan of the classic Scrabble, you’ll love Word2.This ‘massively multi-player online word game’ should keep word geeks happy for hours. The idea is to build your words onto the scrabble board for as long as you possibly can. You don’t have to wait your turn, you just continue building on to your own words. You have two lives, which can be traded for new letters if you find yourself stuck at any stage of the game. Continue playing until you run out of lives. Who knows – you may even make it to the top of the leader board! You can even follow the game on Twitter and Facebook to see how others are going.
Check it out here. Now get back to work!
